Today’s #FishyFriday star is the Weedy Scorpionfish.
The Weedy Scorpionfish, Rhinopias frondosa, is covered in weed like appendages which aid in camouflaging them.
The colouration and patterns are highly variable, coming in shades of red, pink, lavender, brown , light blue, green and yellow. Their skin moults every few weeks at which point they can change their colour.
The Weedy scorpionfish are ambush predators, lying motionless before eating any passing fish or crustacean that they can fit in their mouths.
Having no teeth, the prey is swallowed whole and is pulled into the mouth by the suction created when they open their mouths
