University of Antelope Valley

Dionicia Marie Colon-Mateo is a shining example of student success at UAV - an inspiring story of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.

Dionicia received multiple volleyball scholarship offers, but chose UAV as she was impressed with the close-knit community, intimate class sizes, and meaningful faculty interactions. Additionally, the robust volleyball program, complete with dedicated coaches who shared her passion for the sport, sealed the deal. Dionicia was drawn not only by the athletic opportunities but also by the inclusive campus environment, team camaraderie, and the chance to contribute to her team's success.

Dionicia pursued a challenging path, earning both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice. Her dedication to her studies and her sport was unwavering, but it wasn't without its challenges. One significant obstacle she faced was managing her time effectively as a student-athlete. With rigorous training schedules, travel for games, and the commitment required for volleyball, balancing academics was no easy feat. However, Dionicia rose to the challenge, developing strong time management skills, creating detailed schedules, and maintaining open communication with professors and coaches. Her discipline and determination as a student-athlete ultimately paid off as she successfully earned her degrees.

The impact of her program and degrees on Dionicia's life is undeniable. Her education provided a profound understanding of the criminal justice system and equipped her with the knowledge to make informed decisions. These degrees opened doors to numerous job opportunities, propelling her career forward. Furthermore, the program honed her professional skills, enhancing her critical thinking, research, and communication abilities. As a result, Dionicia now serves as a Deputy Sheriff in Arizona, a role she has held for approximately three years. Her success in law enforcement can be attributed in large part to the strong foundation and passion for the field instilled in her by the Criminal Justice program at UAV.

In an impressive four years, Dionicia completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees, a testament to her dedication and focus. Her favorite quote, "I love the person I’ve become because I fought to become her" encapsulates her journey perfectly. From the courts of college volleyball to the streets of law enforcement, Dionicia's story teaches us that teamwork, dedication, and a commitment to serving others are the keys to success in any arena. Dionicia's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the pursuit of one's passions.
