This week, the High-Level Political Forum discusses the Sustainable Development Goals. Read more about SDG#4: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg4

Goal 4 .:. Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform

Achieving inclusive and equitable quality education for all will require increasing efforts, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia and for vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, indigenous people, refugee children and poor children in rural areas.

PROGRESS OF GOAL 4 IN 2019 Despite the considerable progress on education access and participation over the past years, 262 million children and youth aged 6 to 17 were still out of school in 2017, and more than half of children and adolescents are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics. Rapid technological changes present opportunities and challenges, but the learning environment, the capacities of teachers and the quality of education have not kept pace. Refocused efforts are needed to improve learning outcomes for the full life cycle, especially for women, girls and marginalized people in vulnerable settings. • In 72 countries with recent data, approximately 7 in 10 children aged 3 and 4 were developmentally on track in at least three of the following domains: literacy-numeracy, physical development, social-emotional development and learning. • In 2015, an estimated 617 million children and adolescents of primary and lower secondary school age worldwide – more than 50 per cent – were not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics. Of these, about two thirds were attending school but were not learning in the classroom, or dropped out school. • Some 750 million adults – two thirds of them women – remained illiterate in 2016. Half of the global illiterate population lives in South Asia, and a quarter live in sub-Saharan Africa. • Many developing countries still lack basic infrastructure and facilities to provide effective learning environments. Sub-Saharan Africa faces the biggest challenges: at the primary and lower secondary levels, less than half of schools have access to electricity, the Internet, computers and basic drinking water. • ODA for scholarships amounted to $1.3 billion in 2017. Australia, France, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and institutions of the European Union accounted for nearly two thirds of this total. • Globally, there has been little progress in the percentage of primary school teachers who are trained: it has been stagnating at about 85 per cent since 2015. The proportion is lowest in sub-Saharan Africa (64 per cent).

Kathleen Hamilton Thank you for your reply. It is good to engage in conversations that push our boundaries. My reply to you would be: "Structured according to whose criteria?" The notion of state involvement in education is a very modern one, though it has a very ancient precedent (the state sponsored schools of Sparta). The old adage goes: "He who pays the piper calls the tune." State-funded education will always be for statist ends. Schools are the most efficient way of delivering a centralized curriculum., but they are not the most efficient way of delivering an individualized education. Schools socialize, creating socialists. Education creates independently minded creators and thinkers. I would love to work with Genius School, though I am not happy with the word "School" being associated with the education portal that I am hoping it will grow into. Think of the origins of the word "school". Imagine a David Attenborough doco about shoals of fish swimming in the ocean. One fish changes direction, and then all the fish change with it. An education is not a brainwashing so that we can become unthinking functionaries of the state. Adolf Hitler used schools to great effect to create his Hitler Youth. Education is a legitimate province of the family and the market place. Entrepreneurs and parents are the best partners in the education sphere. I believe we have the tools to make education as wide and as deep as the WWW, but also as individualised as a fingerprint. This is what I am committing the rest of my life to pursue, and I am looking for those who will work with me, so that we can flesh this out over the next ten years. Kathleen, thank you so much for engaging me. I hope I have not offended in my reply.

At #GEV, we support both girls and boys pursuing the arts together. Sadly, many schools have cut their arts programs. Does your school support arts education?

Your website at https://www.ecoescuelatikapata.org/ is very cool. I think it would help you greatly if you made the website bilngual [Spanish/English]. Consider how many eru to the United States and their children grow up speaking English and losing touch with Spanish. By making the website bilingual, they'd be able to maintain contact with their roots and the things that are happening in Peru.

Donnie Nichols Thank you for this great advice! Yes, we are working on the english version of the website currently, so we can give updates and share our knowledge with the world. Also we are working on a crowdfunding project because our school needs to move in the next two years. It is very inspiring to be a part of this network, Im sure it will somehow nurture our school with new opportunities. :)
