Academic abilities and degrees no longer a direction to equate with successful careers. Interesting perspective from a 2nd year university student.

Doing Well At School Isn’t The Only Way To Get Ahead | FYA

I graduated high school with honours in four of five subjects and was named 1 of the top 10 achieving students of my year. For me, the road to high school academic success was long and painful.

This is a good essay as far as it goes, but the writer continues the mantra that schooling = education. This is just not true. Schooling and education are two completely different animals. Schooling has, as its objective, preparation for a controlled life - life as a bureaucrat, soldier, factory worker, holder of a job, politically correct member of the state. Schooling is for the socialization of students; the creation of socialists. It is a narrowing of the mind to believe that the correct answer for a problem is the one that a teacher expects on the next test. Schooling is dominated by age-graded cohorts, and a centralized curriculum. Schooling is what Karl Marx proposed (along with nine other proposals) as essential elements for the rolling out of International Communism. On the other hand, an education is not pre-determined, is not funded by the state, expands the mind and takes into consideration the individualized learning preferences, orientations, passions, genius and local/global context of the learner. Schooling is something that is done to you. An education is something that you pursue and acquire. If we do no separate these two terms and the concepts that are embedded within them, then we will be in danger of perpetuating the problem, no matter how innovative we think we have reformed schools. A school's a school's a school, and the best it can do is give you a good schooling. An education is a transformed life.

Using 5 Whys to auger down into a big idea or problem. An interesting way to develop problem-solving skills for our young learners.

5 Whys: Getting to the Root of a Problem Quickly

5 Whys is a powerful tool for finding the causes of simple or moderately difficult problems, by asking "Why?" at least five times.

This sounds very similar to a technique I've learnt recently called Go Wide, Go Deep which I know use for client meetings to cut through the surface layer answers to get to the real reason of why. I wonder if one originates from the other or if they have a shared ancestry!?

Hi Josh. I've used the Go Wide, Go Deep as a technique when helping students with their research. Immerse them in the topic (go wide) and then when they have found something of specific interest, they go deep and explore the content in detail.

The NASA test is designed to look at the ability to come up with new, different and innovative ideas. 98 % of the kids fell into the genius category.

We are born creative geniuses and the education system dumbs us down, according to NASA scientists

The scientists gave the test to 1,600 children between the ages of 4 and 5. What they found shocked them.

@Karen, that is a great infographic and a great blog! I first connected with Lisa Nielsen on Google+, back when that was a thing, and she and I are still FB friends though we don't interact much anymore. For some reason, I don't think I saw this post when she published it, so I am particularly glad you shared it!

48 Critical Thinking Questions For Any Content Area by Ashley McCann  Critical thinking is the heart and soul of learning, and–in our estimation anyway–ultimately more important than any one specific content area or subject matter. It’s also an over-used and rather nebulous phrase — how do you teach someone to think? Of course that’s the purpose …
