Esu Hill set up her organisation in 2009, due to a redundancy in the last recession. It was after applying to 50 jobs and failing to secure the roles, that Esu realised she was destined to never fit in and if she wasn’t what they wanted, she would go at it alone and set up a business herself.

The company 'The Training Brokers' would help train people to gain the confidence they needed to progress towards a better future through learning and education programmes. Her passion particularly focused on helping people across the spectrum, starting from the unemployed, but also supporting those with mental health issues, ex-offenders, people stuck in poverty.

Esu, from her own experience, knew what it was like to struggle and found her purpose in seeing these people come through their most trying times and coming out the other side.

Where it began

To get started Esu reached out to her previous employer to contract back to them. It was a bold move that paid off because, after a year of hard work, the company continued to grow and in the following year landed a £600K contract.

The company then went on to bid for Government contracts, where they were one of 12 company's selected to deliver the services. A big achievement for such a small company. And more importantly, gave them the positive feedback that their work was not only needed but wanted.

However, like other companies, COVID affected the companies growth and pulled many things into question for Esu and her team. Namely, how long could she continue running The Training Broker? What did the future look like for both her, the team and the company?

The Solution

In response, Esu lent on the support of the Crystal Circle members. Their advice has always been invaluable, in particular the learnings from both Roger and Donna, but it was her circle fellow members who kept her inspired and motivated to keep building the life of her dreams the most. They provided a non-judgemental space and community, which allowed her to thrive.

The questions which came up from her cohort for Esu were focused on her future. They asked about her income and her life/work balance. Life was too short to continue not enjoying the fruits of her labour. They encouraged her to build a future plan.

Upon their advice, Esu began diversifying her income streams in 2021. Specifically focusing on property investment, an industry she knew she could build a sustainable future in and gain support on from her Crystal Circle group.

The Lessons

Moving forward into 2021, Esu continues to work hard. Her long-established tenacity pulling her through the more difficult of times. Esu's advice for others is always to persevere.

As a past refugee, Esu knows the drive to succeed will always be what propels her forward and that has taught her the only way to truly fail is to give up. When you know what's like to have nothing and still be alive, everything else becomes achievable.

Her other major lesson to share is understanding when people reject you, it's not you that is being rejected. Instead, it's more likely the idea or the plan you've submitted. Don't take things too personally and keep going.
